MANCHESTER print shop MuPrint has taken over Students’ Union print shop U-Print in what promises to be a win-win deal for consumers.
MuPrint, owned by former Manchester University students Chris Leuty and John Shiel and based in Victoria Hall, Higher Cambridge Street will now operate U-Print. MuPrint will take on current U-Print print shop manager Dave Ward as a full time employee.
The deal secures the future of the U-Print print shop, located in the basement of the Student Union’s Biko Building and could save the Students’ Union around £50,000 per year.
The deal also means U-Print’s opening hours will increase to 9am-5pm Monday to Friday – previously the shop limited its hours to only four hours per day. U-Print will continue to offer print services to students, staff and the Union itself as before and new owners MuPrint hope to improve services further.
“The deal is a win-win for students,” said MuPrint co-owner John Shiel. “We want U-Print to expand and offer students more. We have 25 years experience serving students in print and media and we will work in partnership with them and the students’ union to deliver excellent value-for-money services.”
The acquisition means U-Print, which was founded in 1988 by MuPrint co-owner Chris Leuty, now returns to its former manager who was released by the Students’ Union in 2011.
Leuty invested his redundancy money in the MuPrint venture and the shop opened its doors at its current HQ on Higher Cambridge Street near its junction with Booth Street West in August 2011.
MuPrint’s growth from start up to an established student print shop in only two years has been remarkable. The shop also offers poster printing, worldwide delivery, high speed sameday printing plus long run printing. Customers as far afield as Bermuda and Hong Kong regularly use its services.
